Angie and I love watching American Pickers and Pawn Stars on TV. Have you ever watched them? We personally love old things that were built to last with a story. Having the chance to use an old camera is part of the fun for us. The other day there was an old Teddy Bear on Pawn Stars that was brought in from 1905 they said went for around $1500.00. Angie was shocked and wondered who would pay that much money for an old bear. I laughed at her and said who pay $1,000 for a hundred year old lens; oh wait…I would. I probably wouldn’t pay that much for a stuffed bear, but I am sure someone out their appreciates its craftsmanship and will cherish it in a collection.
Old photography lenses give a distinctive look. I love the fact we still live in a time where many of them can be used. Not only are they really cool to look at but they can create some beautiful imagery. From time to time I like to share some of the camera’s we own. Ask me about them sometime and I will light up.
This Zeiss Ikon was brought to the world in 1929 and it came in a few varaitions. This one shoots 6×6 . The square format is a lot of fun since the digital cameras we own are 4×6 it challenges us to think differently about composition.
Using multiple lights can help a photographer create depth in your wedding images. If I had time I probably could have used a few more lights on this image. We went in the cave because it started to rain and this gave us an interesting spot to shoot while the weather changed. Wedding Imagery can be so interesting, colorful military uniforms, beautiful light and interesting locations make for some great images. If you like imagery like this make sure you choose a photographer that is able to use lights. Without the lights this is just a dark cave.
It’s funny when you become a photographer how much you pay attention to light. We went to the movies the other day and we walked by a poster of a new movie. Angie says to me ” you are going to go see that just so you can see the lighting huh?”. The answer was yes. Actually going to a movie you know you might not like, just to see how they are lighting it. In some ways our fascination with light has ruined some movie viewing pleasure but it has added some where there used to be none. We have stopped at Sunset just to watch how the light falls on the field. Just when we think we have light all figured out we find another variation of it, different size or shape. Well enough about light it’s time for another picture.
1St place , 2nd place, and third place winner in the Wedding Category
This weekend was the Annual Conference and Image Competition. It was a lot of fun to see our friends from Colorado. A lot of photographers shy away from having their prints judged by others and in doing so miss out on valuable feedback that would have helped them grow as a photographer. I see a lot of photographers looking for validation from print competitions as if now that they have earned a first place they know the should be a professional photographer. In my opinion you will never receive this kind of critique and you should not enter looking for this kind of validation, because you will probably never get it. What you will get is a good idea of how your images in a competition setting are stacking up against other professional photographers in Colorado or if its international, internationally. If you are a husband and wife team like angie and I, It may even give you serious bragging rights and the ability to make fun of the other.
Angie Swept the Wedding Print Competition this year with 3 prints Meriting, and she received 1st , 2nd and 3rd place for colorado. More accolades being brought home for the company proving in my mind that Angie is one of the most talented female wedding photographers in the Country. We will be sharing angies award from WPPI as well later this week.
I want to again say thank you to our clients , without you guys we wouldn’t be able to compete. These images are because of your work and partnership.
