We recently had the opportunity to work with a great Cake company at a wedding! It’s Kelley Kakes and the owner is Kelley. She is fun, creative and does some amazing things with sugar! Her specialty is wedding cakes but she also makes great goodies for birthdays, showers, ect….

1. How did you get started in the Cake business? I was always the one who made the over the top cakes for my kids and parties, and an old h.s. pal talked me into making her wedding cake. I stood back when I was done and knew I had just figured out what I wanted to do with my life.
2. Where are you located?
Denver, CO
3. How long have you been in business?
I officially started making wedding cakes in 1998, but got serious about it when I moved to Denver in 2001.
4. What is your philosophy when it comes to weddings and the cakes you make?
I believe the wedding cake should reflect the couple’s personality and style. I like to think outside the box and tend to attract clients who do the same. This doesn’t necessarily mean they all want crazy colors and designs, but they’re looking for someone who can give their cake the “wow” factor. That’s what I want when someone sees one of my cakes. I want them to say, “Wow!”
5. What makes you stand out? (Something special about your business)
I’m not afraid to be whimsical. I’m an artist first and will gleefully work with any medium to create my client’s vision.
6. What is your favorite thing about what you do?
To me there is nothing more rewarding than bringing a smile to someone’s face with cake! And I get to use my artistic skills to do so
7. Is there anyone or anything that inspires you and the cakes you make for weddings?
The amazing Colette Peters and Mike McCreary are just incredible cake artists… and of course, Duff Goldman. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Duff for several years and when I was just getting started he was such a positive influence for me.
Fun Questions:
8. What is your favorite book?
I can’t pick just one! Interview With a Vampire… and The Dark Tower (the whole series… can’t just pick one!)
9. What is your favorite sound?
The wind through pine trees high up in the mountains
10. What is your favorite smell?
The ocean
11. What is your favorite color?
Deep red (I bet you guessed that)
12. What is your favorite food?
Rare steak and sushi.
Andy & I recently went to the 10 anniversary memorial for Columbine. Because we have lived in Littleton all of our lives and graduated from Columbine ourselves this school is near and dear to our hearts. We knew several people who were there that day including several of our recent wedding clients. The memorial is beautiful and a lot of people from the community turned out to pay their respects.
A few of the students who were at the school that day are also musicians and here is a beautiful song they had written:
“Columbine, flower bloom, tenderly I sing to you. Columbine, roseblood red, heartbreak overflow my head.
Columbine, flower bloom. Columbine there’s hope for you.
Columbine, friend of mine. To your gain, on the mark.
With your love, love again. Comfort peace and sweet release come from you.
Where, it’s true, I hide myself in you. Can you still hear raging guns ending dreams of precious ones.
In God’s son, hope will come, his red stain will take our pain. Columbine, friend of mine.
Peace will come to you in time. Columbine, friend of mine.
Turn a page, to your gain. Keep your heart on the mark.
Comfort us with your love. Love again.
Christ of grace attend this place, we look to you. Honor you.
Fix you in our view. Columbine, flower bloom.
Tenderly I sing to you. Columbine, roseblood red, heartbreak overflows my head.
Columbine, friend of mine. Peace will come to you in time.
Columbine, friend of mine.”
Here are a few pictures from the memorial and the crazy media that was there:
Andy & I have a studio and we do family, children and senior photography as well as the wedding photography! Most of the time these are previous clients of ours and we have a lot of fun watching them grown their family! I realize that we don’t share these sessions as much as our weddings and engagements, so today I thought I would post a few of our favorite pictures from Owen who just turned 1! I took pictures at his actual birthday party and then they brought him in for a session at the studio! And of course they gave him cake, that his dad made :). I don’t think I have ever seen a kid be so neat and clean!
Happy Birthday Owen!
We recently got together with some photographer friends and some great models! We played with some lighting techniques, hung out in the rain and took a few pictures! Andy & I had a great time and thought we would share a few from the day! This is the same kind of shoot that would be done for a trash the dress. You can see our past work for trash the dress here.
